Stable Talk @ Kensington

Kensington has long been a University area, diverse, cultural and a long list of cheap and cheerfuls, offering to all the Uni students and locals looking for tasty eats. With upcoming developments now and in the near future, the area needs a few more options for those that want something a little more upmarket.

A casual cafĂ© by day to tapas and wine bar by evening, cozy Stable Talk is a warm welcome to Kensington. Opening their doors 5 months ago they are offering some tasty delights and great wines.  As the name suggests, yes there is a lot of horse race theming throughout the restaurant.

Dining with friends, because you know tapas is best shared, the wine plentiful and food is delicious and of course the company is wonderful too! We definitely had very enjoyable evening.  The staff are friendly and welcoming.

There is a kick ass cocktail list with some fresh new cocktails and the wine list runs with international and local wines (some by the glass) but mostly by the bottle. We have arrived early so a little tipple to start the evening is a must along side a bowl of warm marinated olives.

These plump, briny kalamata olives are addictive!

Our dining buddies arrive and a bottle of Lost Turtle, Sauvignon Blanc from, the Marlborough region is opened. The passionfruit notes are crispy and fruity.

The menu is quiet extensive with a few specials thrown in.

We decide to do one of the specials, the fresh spanner crab with tomato tartar.

Fresh chunks of crab were swiftly forked up. This was a fresh and light starter.

Fried calamari slider with salad of rocket and lemon aioli and a chorizo slider.

The fried calamari sliders were pretty good. The slider bun were soft and fluffy. However I think it was the chorizo slider that one person had that was a winner.

Potato Bravas

I can never go pass a serve of potato bravas. I mean they are fried potatoes!!! These were crispy and fluffy and a generous serve.

Salt cod croquettas with lemon aioli

The salt cod croquettas were crispy and hot but I didn’t think there was a lot of fish flavour. I think I was expecting something saltier. That being said they were tasty enough, just not what I was hoping for.

Beetroot, kale and goats cheese salad with coffee salt.

The girls like the salad, the boys wouldn’t touch it. What is the aversion to kale? I really liked this salad. The beetroot had bite and the nubs of goats cheese offered a salty, creamy texture with hints of coffee salt granules.

Slow cooked beef and pork meatballs in rich tomato sauce

We ordered two serves of the meatballs, mainly because we knew the boys would like them. They were a decent size swimming in a bowl of tomato sauce.

Braised chicken in Olarosso sherry and cinnamon

The chicken would have to be the winner of the night. A serving is half a (small) chicken served with puree sweet potato. The sherry really shines through this dish. It was delicious.

Pan con tomato garlic bread

Still feeling a little peckish we finish off with some of the garlic and tomato bread. It’s crusty with hints of garlic and a light fresh tomato topping.

But you quite end a meal without dessert. So we share a serve of the Churros with hot chocolate

The churros are hot and cinnamony sweet and dunked into the spicy Mexican style chocolate these are the perfect ending to our meal.

If you are looking for a restaurant where you can have a long leisurely dinner sharing plates and sipping on lovely wines, then this is the spot for you.

Stable Talk has been a long awaited and much needed addition to the dining scene in Kensington.  It's the Tomato Sauce Odds!!!

The Mill @ Echuca

Last week found me driving around the State of Victoria for two friends weddings.  That's right two weddings in the space of 5 days.

One of the weddings was on the Murray River in the twin towns of Echuca Moama on the NSW/Victoria border.  The historic town of Echuca is situated on the Murray River and the Campaspe River and the Old Port of Echuca takes you back to the early days.

There are quite a few good dining options in Echuca and I found myself at The Mill for Happy Hour between 4-6pm on a Wednesday night.  This bar is in the old flour mill.  High ceilings, rustic old brick warehouse meets industrial concrete.

As I am dining solo I was lucky enough to have the Chef prepare me the Chefs Share plates for one (usually for two people).  Grabbed myself a lovely glass of white to enjoy while I waited.

Sitting near a window and enjoying the warmth of the later afternoon sun streaming through and looking at these gorgeous prints of Audrey Hepburn.

The Mill is a very laid back, casual comfy cool place to hangout!

The feasting begins!

The first dish to arrive is a small plate of creamy hommus topped with a crunchy dukkah. The pita bread wedges are light and fluffy with crispy edges.

Next up was a wedge of Greek Kefalograviera cheese topped with barberries, pine nuts and mint. This was salty and squeaky and delicious.

The third dish was a lovely piece of delicate poached salmon shakshuka. Glazed in a mild Middle Eastern style tomato sauce and a dollop of smoked vanilla labne.  This dish was delicious.  the smoked vanilla in the labne was gorgeous!

Next up was a crispy Vietnamese springroll filled with a very tasty chicken and prawn filling with a Vietnamese dressing.  Sadly I forgot to take a photo of this!  I really enjoy a good springroll and these were up there!

By the next plate, and another glass of wine down, I am struggling but solider through. The next dish a Thai BBQ satay skewer. The chicken is charred but tender and the peanut sauce hugs it like some love. It’s delicious.

I end the meal with a lovely little 3 grain salad, topped with yoghurt and pomegranate seeds. I only take taste a couple of tablespoons. Although lovely I am at my limit.

If you are ever in the area, I can highly recommend a visit to The Mill. The Chef has designed a versatile and unique menu in this town and it packs global flavours.

Of course, Happy Hour is one of the best deals around!

Tapas at El Bulli @ Surry Hills

For traditional tapas you cannot pass up on a night out at El Bulli on Elizabeth St in Surry Hills.  I have had the pleasure of dining here once before a couple of years ago and it's always been on my list to return.  So when I saw a voucher deal online for a 7 course tapas banquet for a fabulous price of $39 I could not refuse.

On a Friday and Saturday night there is the occasional flamenco dancer, however being a Sunday night it's on the 'quieter' side, although most tables are occupied. There is a currently a Paella and Sangria Sunday Special on until the end of June. We are dining early and are seated straight away.  It's cozy and romantic and dim and very much reminds me of little Spanish restaurants in Barcelona.

The menu is broken down into sections mainly - cosas de picar (things to nibble), cosas de pinchar (things to skewer), cazuelas (little dishes), platos principales (main dishes), ensaladas (salads and Y para finalizar (desserts).  As we are having a banquet we are given our own little menu.

El bulli menu

We start off with the house red wine sangria.  It's a family recipe and is crispy and refreshing.  I will admit that I am eyeing off the white sangria at a table close by.

sangria (by the glass or the jug)

We start off with pan con tomate - toasted ciabatta rubbed with garlic, tomato & sea salt. Drizzled with basil infused Spanish Olive oil.

pan con tomate

It doesn't take long for our table to be laden with tapas.  Definitely great service.

Next up we have the albondigas de paella which are paella rolled into balls with chicken & chorizo pieces throughout, rolled, crumbed, fried & drizzled with alioli.

The rice is fluffy and tinged with saffron and piping hot.  Be careful biting into these.  Why do fried things always taste better!

paella balls

We are offered a bowl of croquetas de jamon and empanadillas.

The croquetas are filled with white sauce & ham covered in breadcrumbs, lightly fried & topped with alioli. They are creamy and cheesy and I really like these.

croquettes and emanadillas

The empanadillas are crispy purses of tasty beef and olives.  I little salty goodness wrapped in pastry.

I would have to say the pinchitos de pollo was my favourite tapas dish of the night.  The chicken is tender and tasty and the chimichurri and lemon put a zing into this stick.  The chimichurri is fresh and lively.

chook on a skewer

No tapas meal is complete unless you have a meatball. We have the Albondigas con Tuco - a traditional meatball with paprika and tomato salsa. These albondigas are the size of a tennis ball and very filling.
meatballs

We end with El Bulli's famous patatas that are deep fried and then covered with an emulsion of fritas and bravas dressing.  Who doesn't love deep fried potato and these are really good.

patatas bravas El Bulli style

The only downside to this voucher deal was that it didn't include a dessert ending.  I would have happily given up one of the dishes to end with a churros!  However on saying that I really didn't have the room to squeeze in anything else (but that's just the little piggy that I can be).

I will definitely return for more tapas in the future.  The menu is extensive and covers quite a bit of seafood dishes too.  The atmosphere is perfect for a party or function (and they cater to groups too).

Girls Night Out @ The Carrington Hotel - get your tapas on!

The Carrington Hotel (which is part of the Drink and Dine Group who also own pubs such as the The Forrester, The Norfolk and The Abercrombie) and more specifically Beba Y Cene, the Spanish inspired restaurant at the back of the bar, has long been on my bucket list of must dos.  This is the type of place that serves food that I love - plates to share!  Not sure why it's taken me so long to get here and as the new food blogger on the block I am running behind the crowd!  So when a girls night out takes me to Surry Hills for happy hour cocktails I also take the opportunity to suggest we head to The Carrington afterwards for dinner.

We arrive and its busy, busy, busy (it's a Saturday night after all).  Silly me has forgotten to make a reservation and we put our name down on the list to await a table.  That's okay, gives me a chance to check out the main bar area too. We head to the bar area for a bottle of wine (between the four of us!) and settle in until a table is ready.  The Bledisloe Cup is on so the bar is packed with sports fans with a mix of Aussies and Kiwis barracking for their teams and then there was us girls who weren't that interested in watching it!

extensive pintxos and tapas menu

On our way to our table Luke waves hello from the kitchen as we pass and I feel a bit special - how does he know me? -  Is my blog famous already?? (**totes joking**) and I later realise that he has actually replied to my instagram message and I assume he makes the connection as I pass. Nevertheless, I feel very welcomed here. Our waiter Matty settles us into our table and we start to discuss the menu.  Immediately I could tell that he was very passionate about the food and suggestions and recommendations were being thrown at us.  It's always a pleasure dining when your waiter is enthusiastic about everything!

The menu is large with a mix of platters, pintxos, tapas and mains.  We are all about sharing plates so we get to sample more, being the little piggies that we are.  However a couple of the girls are hesitant towards the 'unusual' types of protein and I assure them they will be fine and need to be a little more adventurous (just don't think about it) - and they agree as long as we don't talk about it in detail!  Fair play! We make our selection of four tapas and we think that is enough, however Matty talks us into also ordering a main to share too.

The plates come as they are ready and it's not long before the dishes start to arrive.   First plate served was a special complimentary dish for us (as the specials had sold out for the evening).  Thanks Luke!  A slider with smoked corned pork neck with a mustard cabbage slaw (?) forgive me if that isn't 100% correct but it would be close. It now appears I am a bad food blogger if I can't even remember what was in the first dish but in my defence we had already had a few alcoholic beverages leading up to this and my brain may have been having some trouble computing the ingredients!

smoked and corned pork neck sliders

Sliders are the best invention.  Perfectly sized and just right as a starter. These sliders are tasty, the meat was tender and the slaw slightly acidic enough to cut through the richness of the meat.

BBQ shrooms with chorizo bits

The mushrooms are 'meaty' and smoky and cooked perfectly and with slivers of melty, fatty chorizo this dish was a winner.  I can't stop myself from going back for more bites.

curry goat empanadas with saffron yoghurt

Piping hot these crispy parcels of curried goat are tender and juicy. The goat isn't as gamy as I had thought it might be. The deep yellow saffron yoghurt is creamy and with a hint of saffron.  These are little parcels of crispy heaven.  I love the saltiness on the crispy coating! I look over to one of my friends and she seems to be good with it.  It's a total head game when it comes to some types of food.

chipotle meatballs with sofrito and manchego

I will admit that I don't often choose meatballs when I'm dining out because more often than not I am disappointed with them.  Usually they are dry or to dense or have more filler than meat, however these little balls were a little better than that. Perhaps on the drier side (for my preference) however the sofrito sauce was packed with flavour and who doesn't love gooey, melted cheese on top.

morcilla stuffed squid with tomato and chilli

This tapas dish was my pick out of the four tapas and I hoped the others would like it.  I really like blood sausage and have tasted different varieties throughout my travels.  Morcilla is a more subtle blood sausage and paired with the tomato and chilli sauce it is fantastic. It's not overpowering at all.  The squid tube is charred nicely and is tender but still with some bite to it.  The chilli adds a slight kick to it just to ramp it up a little more!  A glimpse over the my friends to see how they have coped with it...their not gagging and they are nodding their heads so that's a great thumbs up!

beef cheeks with coffee, jalapeno and carrot puree

The beef cheeks braised in coffee is rich and deeply flavoured, but its the carrot puree underneath that I keep going back for (even though I'm so full!).  Creamy and smooth and amazing it has a hint of jalapeno that tingles the tongue. I think we all just had a moment of silence followed by a groan and moan from each of us as we ate this.  Hands down the dish of the night.  I reckon I could have just a bowl of the carrot puree and be a contented woman - I don't suppose you guys would be willing to share the recipe would you? I'll keep it a secret I promise!

As full as we were by this point, we were coerced into dessert.  It seems Matty has a way of selling the dishes (and rightly so, we are a very happy bunch of girls).  You just gotta pull out that extra stomach for dessert (and in my case that's a big call) but we decided to share two of the dishes.  The fried milk was a must do and the churros for one of my friends who loves them.

fried milk with orange and pecans

Fried milk has been on the list to try foods and it's also on my list to cook myself.  While travelling in Spain many years ago I didn't get the opportunity it sample it, so I took it tonight!  The fried milk is custardy and not to sweet and well anything deep fried in my book is always a winner and then dusted in sugar and cinnamon it was just well, amazing. The fresh oranges and the raisin and orange syrup with a smattering of pecans through it I was in love with it. Definitely a must order dish.

churros and chocolate

Hot, sugary and dipped in chocolate what's not to like about these famous little sticks of dough.

As the kitchen and restaurant was slowing down for the night I took the opportunity to introduce myself to Luke and to thank him for such a great meal. Luck was on my side this evening too because Jamie Thomas (executive chef of Drink 'n' Dine) was in the house too!  Double score.  I have been following Jamie and Luke on instagram (and I find myself constantly drooling over their pictures of food) and it's nice to finally meet them in person. They have taken a few moments out of their busy schedule to chat with me and answer questions (and I have held back tonight!) I would talk all night if given the chance - and  I have promised to return for Tuesday night Pintxos and also breakfast one weekend soon.

and Matty I promise I won't stalk you on facebook..................

Aquavivas @ Darlinghurst

I recently found out that one of the guys that I have been working for for the past few months has a little secret...a dirty little secret......and he had been holding out on us!  He is a singer/songwriter/ guitar player in his spare time (he also loves to cook as a side note:)).  Woah, how come we didn't know this?  Well I am now in on the secret...and he emailed me a couple of days ago telling me he had a small gig at Aquavivas in Darlinghurst.  Wanting to support him with his hobby, I was on it like a kid with candy (and dare I say many adults hahaha) and I found myself at this little neighbourhood gem mid week.

Aquavivas is in the little pocket of restaurants along Stanley Street, opened last year and they are making a name for themselves (in a good way!)! The Fernandes boys own this little bar cum restaurant which is in a two storey terrace with lots of dark wood, dark navy blue walls and velvet covered comfy chairs.  The back door opens out onto a long terrace and upstairs there is a dining room with lounges and low tables.  It is softly lit with tea light candles scattered around the low tables. Their love of music shines through too with musical instruments scattered throughout. The bar is cozy and intimate, perfect for small groups , there is even the 'Mini Mansion' which is a table for two under the stairs with the option to curtain off the intimate area, perfect for a romantic rendezvous.

As for the food, they serve up delicious modern Australian dishes with a Portuguese influence and are all designed to share.  Dishes with quirky names like 'chickpea planks' (chickpea chips), 'juvenile cephalopods' (calamari) and 'controversial watermelon' (cured watermelon) will have you smiling and salivating.  There is also happy hour cocktails or in our case, a jug of Pimm's along with charcuterie boards, cheese boards ($20) or serves of chicken wings.

The menu appears to be seasonal and there are far to many dishes for me to choose tonight...so we decide on a charcuterie board along with a jug of Pimm's and settle in before Jay starts his set.

The boys really go out of their way to let you know what's on the plate and are eager to please, they are enthusiastic and you can see their passion and excitement.....me, not only am I drooling over the plate,  I am also drooling over the accent!

The Pimm's is refreshing and minty

Pimm's

We are presented with a long tile full of house cured bresola, pickled onion and cabbage, a wonderfully smooth chicken liver parfait, a few shards of 'hydro pig' (crackling dusted with paprika) and a big slice of rabbit and quince terrine served with house made ciabatta and crackers laced with caraway.  This is heaven on a slab!

Charcuterie Board
ciabatta, rabbit and quince terrine, house cured bresola, pickled onion and cabbage, hydro pigs, chicken liver parfait and crackers with caraway seeds.

I think I moaned with the first mouthful of chicken liver parfait and I know I was smiling with every bite of the rabbit terrine and those hydro pig's...are crunchy bites of deliciousness and I could eat just a bowl full of those (and they sell them too!).  I would highly recommend one of these boards - to share or not!  The cheese board look pretty inviting to, but that was not ours to touch!

As for Jay?  His set went fantastic and I loved listening to him play and sing..  His voice is very Jeff Buckley and his sound is very Blue/Folksy. Guitar, harmonica and a great voice. I've asked him for a signed album!  Lawyer by day.....singer by night.....I can dig it!

I nicked a chickpea chip off Jay's plate as I was leaving, for research purposes of course!  and it was crunchy on the outside and creamy on the inside, dipped in a garlicy dip and it's a winner!

I'll be back boys.....and I'm bringing some friends..........
