EPCOT F&W 2010 - Day 3

Today was all about eating around the world. I literally spent the whole day eating around the F&W world showcase. I had challenged myself to eat at least one sample from each country's cart and I still had alot to get through. No breakfast and straight into chowing through it at 11am (when the F&W opens)

Why not start the day with some Central and South American flavours.
Roasted Corn & Cheese Empanada

Although the pastries was crispy and flaky, it was a little on the dry side and not enough filling in the middle.

Grilled beef skewer with Chimichurri Sauce

Anything that you can eat off a stick is great in my opinion, easy food on the go and there is something raw and animalistic about ripping the meat off a stick.  The flavours in this beef were wonderful, the beef was tender and had a good char on it.  The chimichurri sauce paired well with the beef and offered and fresh lift to the dish.

Moving 'North' to Mexico I discovered Tamales, which I had not tasted before.

Tamal de Pollo (Chicken Tamales)

Never having had a tamale before, I wasn't sure what to expect...it was stodgy and starchy and was mild in flavour. Perhaps better in the real Mexico?
Esquilis (pan fried corn and cheese)

If my tummy had capacity to eat seconds of this dish I would be queueing up before you could say Ole!The corn was sweet and tender and the queso fresco (fresh Mexican cheese) on top was mild and fresh. Definitely a winner!

Jumping continents in a single leap (or a few steps) I was in China.

Pork Pot Stickers

As I was living in the Arabian Peninsula at the time, where I didn't eat pork very often (although you could buy it at the supermarket in a special 'porcine room' that was hidden away from local eyes (and I always felt prying eyes were judging my food choices! This trip I certainly was making up for my lack of porcine intake.  Lots of porky delights grabbed my attention. Every. Single, Time!   These pot stickers were moist and tasty.  The wheat wrapping was not to thick and they were steamed perfectly.

Xinjiang BBQ Chicken stick

Dry and flavourless - bad choice EPCOT

The sun was shining hot and hard down on my head and it was time to quench the thirst.

Green Tea Plum Slush

This was not a F&W special, I got this from the Joy of Tea stand. It was very refreshing! Cold and slightly tart from the plum.

Wow, lots of 'travelling' today and over to another continent. (I sometimes wish travelling could be so easy and cheap...hahaha!)

Seared beef tenderloin with sweet potato puree

The beef was very meltingly tender for a 'low and slow' braise, but it was the sweet potato puree that won me over and the BBQ sauce had zing!

Back over to the Continent, Europe

Nuremberger sausage in Pretzel Roll

Now this is what I call a sausage!  When the sausage is twice the size as your roll your doing great.  I have always been in favour of the more protein, less bread ratio in a sandwich/roll and my eyes lit up.  I love the salty, crusty outer part of pretzel bread, but unfortunately my tummy doesn't enjoy it so much anymore.  I tend to steer clear of stodgy carbs nowadays (although do indulge occasionally).  The bite of pretzel bread I did allow myself was salty but not crusty so I focused on the sausage which was moist and tasty and the Bavarian mustard certainly had a kick to it!

Bake cheese ravioli, bolognese sauce

Oozy, hot, melted mozzarella on top of a huge ravioli, filled with a bolognese sauce.  How can you go wrong?

Beef kofta with pita

As I have previously mentioned, I had been living in the Middle East, Dubai in fact  and this kofta had big shoes to fill! Unfortunately it came up very short...dry, flavourless and just not nice at all...one bite is all I took before binning it.

Iced Mint Tea
There is nothing better than a glass or two of hot mint tea after a great dinner. It aids in digestion and its very refreshing (and addictive). After visiting Morocco last year, and sitting through numerous tea making sessions I was curious about the mint iced tea....unfortunately another non-contender. If it had used a little more sugar and fresh mint leaves in the cup it would have made all the difference!

Steamed mussels with roasted garlic

I love mussels, but if you overcook them they become pieces of rubber....These, although full of garlicy flavour goodness, were overcooked and chewy....

 Godiva Chocolate Iced Coffee
Creamy, chocolate, coffee...but it could have been any type of chocolate used.

Chicken Chipotle sausage with sweetcorn polenta
Winner! Winner! Chicken dinner!  This dish was one of my favourites of the festival.  The sweetcorn polenta was creamy and just the right consistency.  The sausage was smoky and the roasted capsicum was charred perfectly.
Spanakopita

Crispy filo pastry that was flaky, the filling was moist with a good balance of cheese and spinach.
 Beef & Corn Pie

Being my last dish of the day I have to say I was very disappointed...this was dry and crispy (obviously sitting around far to long).....it was a shame to finish off the countries with such a let down dish and if I could have possibly fit anything else in I would have gone back for something else, but I was at bursting point from the amount of dishes I sampled today.

I can definitely recommend the Epcot Food & Wine Festival for any foodie who also likes a bit of Disney Magic thrown in!

EPCOT F&W 2010 - Day 2

A full day of F&W - Day 2 had a lot of dishes to work my way through. I had my little F&W Passport and I was ready by 11am to start working my way around the globe (again!)

Where to start...why not with some smoked meat

Charcuterie; Cheese: Applewood Smoked Beef, Duck and Ham

Yeah, it was smoked meat, tasty enough. I hadn't tasted smoked duck before and it was a lovely fatty texture, but it was missing something flavourwise

Heading over towards Canada

Canadian Cheddar Cheese Soup
Hands down, the tastiest cheese soup I have had! ....actually come to think ofit I think I have only had it once before and no where near as tasty….I couldgobble more of this, but I need to save room for more F&W treats.

Vidal Icewine

Sweet, cold and hit the spot….took me back to some wonderful memories at Niagra Falls when I was living in Toronto.

Onto France, talk about jumping Continents!

Crème Brulée au Chocolate au Lait

For a person who doesn’t eat desserts often I have to say I was doing well this trip. I will say though that anything caramel or toffee I'm THERE!!…This was so lovely I was licking the container!

Escargots Persillade en Brioche
Disney Fans - don't you just love the hidden Mickey?

Bread and chewy snails are just that, like chewing rubber! So I was taking agamble on this dish….I managed the snails…the bread was a no go. The taste was good, just to chewy!

Grand Mariner and Grey Goose Orange Slush

Need I say more….heaven in a plastic martini glass

Now it was time to go Down Under!

Grilled Lamb Chop with Roasted Potato Salad and Red WineReduction

Seared Barramundi with Blistered Cherry Tomatoes, Arugula, and Lemon Oil

Homesick was how I was feeling as I ordered my lamb chops….and the seared barrawas so good….perfectly cooked through too! A coldie (a cold beer) would havegone down a treat with these dishes!

Staying the region of the Pacific I made my way to Japan. I wish travelling was so easy!
 Tuna Sensation

This dish was truly a sensation. Very tasty and very very fresh…the tuna had a good flavour and the sauce compliemented the freshness....I like to eat my raw tuna very cold too
 Wafu Ribettes

The wafu ribettes were dry and not that appetizing, it looked better than ittasted.
One more stop in Poland
Kielbasa and Potato Pierogies with Caramelized Onions and SourCream
Chopin Strawberry Balsamic Chiller

This was a lovely little dish. All the flavours together makes a party in mymouth! As for the drink...I have to be honest, I don't remember much aboutit...so it couldn't have left a huge impact on me...sorry....

and just because I was in EPCOT Mexico dancing with Senor Duck (and perhaps too much alcohol!)

Epcot F&W Festival 2010 - Day 1 Part 2

and the feasting continues in Part 2 (the afternoon session!)

Singapore: Shrimp Cake with Singapore Noodle Salad

I didn’t like the shrimp cake (oddly as I usually love them). I found this very bland, cold and spongy…the cold noodles however were tasty with the sesame oil tossed through them.

Hops and Barley: Boston-style Crab Cake with Cabbage Slaw and Rémoulade

I love crab cakes but being from Australia were seafood is super expensive, especially crab (and lobster) I was eager to sink my teeth into them. (are you surprised that our seafood is expensive considering we are the biggest island in the world?...yeah it’s a huge issue here)…I digress….

I have to say I was disappointed. Why? mainly because of the dill mixed through it. I am not a fan.

Hops and Barley: New England Lobster Roll

Again, was disappointed due to the amount of dill sprinkled through it.

Hops and Barley: Boston Lager (I think)

Enough to wet my lips….

US: Bison Chili with Wild Mushrooms, Cabernet, and Pepper Jack Cheese

Well hello Bison Chilli! I am moving to Bison country and to meet me a cowboy, where I can eat chilli and saddle up a horse….this chilli was get my whip out delish!.

US: Heirloom Tomatoes with Oregon Blue Cheese, Red Onions, and Basil

Really loved this dish. Cold and tasty with a wonderful bite from the Oregon Blue….I am hunting down the recipe!

US: Red Stag by Jim Beam

Cold and icy refreshing, just what I needed as it was getting hot and I was parched! The glass was empty very quickly!

Spain: Seared Albacore Tuna with Romesco Sauce
Another dish that I wasn’t overly impressed with. The tuna was way overcooked and the romesco sauce was gluggy.

Ireland: Lobster and Scallop Fisherman’s Pie

Yum, yum and yum….the lobster was sweet and the scallop tender…nothing overcooked here! An absolute winner!

Desserts & Champagne: Strawberry Angel Verrine

The only reason I ended up with this was because I wanted the tasting plate of all three but they had run out of dark chocolate sensation. It was light and tasty enough. I am not usually a huge dessert person, but occassionaly I will indulge.

Desserts & Champagne: White Star Impérial

Sweet, crisp and lovely…Thanks Moet…

Puerto Rico: Medianoche Sandwich

A choice just to say I had something from the country….I only took one bite…to much bread for me and at this point I was feeling rather full….I should have had the Asopao de Pollo (Chicken Soup with Rice)

Puerto Rico: Bacardi Frozen Torched Cherry Colada

But this! Wow….an adult slurpee that was very cherry tasting……..yum

So what's next.....more days of the F&W Festival?

Epcot F&W Festival 2010 - Day 1 - Part 1

Back in October I spent 2 weeks at Disney World for a dream holiday. Naturally I planned this holiday around the Epcot Food and Wine Festival and Halloween. What foodie wouldn't?

The days I spent sampling the offerings was amazing along with alot of the normal park fun. Now going it solo was a mammoth tast on the tummy, but one that I had to try and manage...I did rather well.. Let's just say I got a passport stamp for at least one dish (if not two!) at each country kiosk! No mean feat! it did take a few days...

So where to start? First Day?

New Zealand - Seared Sea Scallop with Vegetable Slaw and Lemon OilWine - Villa Maria Private Bin Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc
The scallop was seared perfectly and the Sla whad just the right tang. As for the wine, it was crisp and cold!

Chile - Shrimp CevicheWine - Concha y Toro Casillero del Diablo Sauvignon Blanc
The two plump shrimp were awash with a spicy tomato based sauce (unusual for a ceviche) but with plenty of lime juice and topped with roasted corn kernals, which gave it a bit of crunch. The wine was lovely and crisp, but not as enjoyable as the New Zealand Sav Blanc.

Brazil: Grilled Pork Skewer with Farofa

I was surprised by this stick of meat! The Pork was fairly tender but the dusting of farofa was different. Saw dust texture with hints of salt and spice. Farofa is widely used in Brazil and is made of a flour mixture with salt, spice and sometimes meat...it is used in many forms (see here)

Brazil: Shrimp Stew with Coconut and Lime
Shrimp, coconut cream and zesty lime, what else could a girl ask for....YUM!

Mexico: Frozen Mango Margahertia
Nothing better than a frozen alcohol treat to cool you down on a hot day!

Korea: Lettuce Wraps with Roast Pork and Kimchi Slaw
The roast pork was a little dry and the kimchi slaw and a definite spicy kick to it!

Korea: Barbecue Short Rib with Steamed Rice and Cucmber Kimchi
I was dissapointed by the short ribs, they weren't as tender as I was hoping for.

Coming up....Part 2 of my first day of the Food and Wine Festival
